Five faculty members have been awarded Harvard College Professorships: Joseph D. Harris, Steven R. Levitsky, Michael Puett, Jennifer L. Roberts, and Maryellen Ruvolo. The Harvard College Professorships are five-year appointments. They provide faculty with extra support for research or scholarly activities and a semester of paid leave or a summer salary.
Hammonds to step down as dean in July
Harvard College Dean Evelynn M. Hammonds announced today that she will step down as dean on July 1, choosing to return to teaching and research in the departments of the History of Science and African and African American Studies.
Michael Shinagel was honored on May 14 for his accomplishments as dean of the Extension School, a position he has held since 1977. He will be retiring at the end of this academic year.
Adam Cohen, professor of chemistry and chemical biology and of physics, and Hopi Hoekstra, professor of organismic and evolutionary biology and molecular and cellular biology, are among the 27 scientists nationwide to be appointed as investigators by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Hyman to lead Society for Neuroscience
Steven E. Hyman, former provost and Distinguished Service Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology at Harvard, has been named president-elect of the Society for Neuroscience, the world’s largest organization of brain and nervous system scientists and physicians.
Richard J. Murnane, the Juliana W. and William Foss Thompson Professor of Education and Society at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), will serve as acting dean of the HGSE, President Drew Faust announced May 9.
Faculty Council meeting held April 24
At their last meeting of the year on April 24, the members of the Faculty Council approved preliminary versions of the University Extension School courses for 2013-14 and Courses of Instruction for 2013-14.

Diana Sorensen is one of four new trustees of the National Humanities Center.
11 elected to American Academy
The American Academy of Arts and Sciences has elected 11 from Harvard as its newest members.
The innovative international scholar Tamar Herzog has been appointed the Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs in Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She also will become the Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

On April 10, the Faculty Council discussed consultation and communication, academic integrity, and HarvardX’s impact on campus.
Faculty Council meeting held March 27
On March 27, the Faculty Council met with the president to ask and answer questions as representatives of the faculty, discussed draft principles on outside activities, and heard a proposal about reading and examination periods.
On March 13, the Faculty Council heard a report on the capital campaign and discussed the proposed outside activities policy.
First Santiago Ramón y Cajal Professor is named
Jeff Lichtman, the Jeremy R. Knowles Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, has been appointed as the first Ramón y Cajal Professor of Arts and Sciences.
New leader in teaching, learning
Robert A. Lue has been named the Richard L. Menschel Faculty Director of the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, placing him at the forefront of efforts to rethink teaching and learning, both on campus and off.
Faculty Council meeting held Feb. 13
On Feb. 13, the Faculty Council heard presentations on the Harvard Initiative for Learning and Teaching and from the Standing Committee on Women.
Jennifer A. Lewis, an internationally recognized leader in 3-D printing and biomimetic materials, has been appointed as the first Hansjörg Wyss Professor of Biologically Inspired Engineering at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and as a core faculty member of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.
Tom Everett to retire from Harvard
The Office for the Arts at Harvard and Harvard’s Department of Music announced that Thomas G. Everett, director of Harvard Bands since 1971, will retire Feb. 15. His Harvard career will be celebrated in various ways at the University, including a Jazz Bands concert dedicated to him on April 13 at 8 p.m. in Sanders Theatre.
Erin K. O’Shea, the director of the FAS Center for Systems Biology, has accepted the position of vice president and chief scientific officer of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She will also maintain her lab and involvement at Harvard.
Professor joins Arctic commission
President Barack Obama has appointed James J. McCarthy, Alexander Agassiz Professor of Biological Oceanography in the Museum of Comparative Zoology, to the U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC).
