Harvard College Marathon Challenge participants hit the pavement for community and charity

Miguel Perez-Luna '15, who is organizing a bus that will take members of the Harvard community to the starting line in Hopkinton, often trained on a treadmill during the winter months. Anna Dolan '15 also hit the treadmill at the Malkin Athletic Center. Recently the pair connected with members of the Harvard College Marathon Challenge for an outdoor run along the Charles River, minus the snow.

“I think people want to understand why they like running and why even average humans are so good at it, and why some people are so unbelievably good at it,” said Daniel Lieberman, professor and chair of human evolutionary biology and principal investigator in the department’s Skeletal Bio Lab. “There’s a reason people love a marathon: They actually enjoy it. It’s not a nasty chore. It’s a celebration of the human body.”

Wynton Marsalis’ appointment is the latest example of the University’s closer embrace of the arts since a presidential task force called in 2008 for a concerted effort to increase the presence of the arts on campus. “I am delighted that Harvard has recognized the need to make cultural literacy an integral part of its curriculum,” Marsalis said. “I hope that other institutions will follow suit to foster a deeper appreciation among all Americans for the democratic victory of our cultural legacy.”
