Ambassador Stephen W. Bosworth, who transformed Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy during his 12 years as dean, is joining Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs as a senior fellow.

Belfer Center Director Graham Allison said Bosworth would bring to the Kennedy School a wealth of experience as a career diplomat, with a long focus on Asia and the Korean peninsula, areas of intense interest for the Belfer Center. Allison said: “We are delighted that one of the most influential experts in the world on Korean policy will now help the Belfer Center develop new initiatives on security and diplomacy involving the Korean Peninsula.”

Harvard Kennedy School Dean David T. Ellwood recognized Bosworth for his national service, and welcomed him to HKS. “Stephen Bosworth brings to the School a broad range of international affairs expertise, and will provide our students with a valuable opportunity to engage with and learn from one of our country’s leading diplomats.”

Bosworth joined The Fletcher School as dean in 2001, immediately after serving as U.S. ambassador to South Korea. While at The Fletcher School he continued to serve his country, as U.S. special representative for North Korea policy from March 2009 to October 2011, concentrating on the issue of North Korea’s nuclear weapons.

As a diplomat, he served as ambassador to Tunisia from 1979-81, and ambassador to the Philippines from 1984-87, when he played a key role in the delicate negotiations that led to the transition from dictatorship to democracy.
