Margarita Alegría honored for contributions to Latino community

Margarita Alegría, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, is the recipient of the 2011 Excellence in Hispanic Mental Health Research, Advocacy, and Leadership Award from the National Resource Center for Hispanic Mental Health. Alegría is also the director of Cambridge Health Alliance’s Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research.

Honored for her many contributions to the Latino community and the mental health arena, Alegría has long been a champion of researching disparities in mental health and substance abuse services, with the goal of improving access, equity, and quality of these services for disadvantaged and minority populations.

Alegría received the award at the annual Shining Lights: Outstanding Leaders for a Brighter Future for Hispanics awards gala held in early June.
