Dennis memorial service today

Former Harvard College Library staffer member Rodney Dennis, who joined the Houghton Library in 1963 before being named curator of manuscripts at the library from 1965 until his retirement in 1991, died Oct. 11 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital after an emergency operation for an aortic aneurysm. Visiting hours with the family will be held at Harvard Epworth Church (1555 Massachusetts Ave.) today (Oct. 19) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Memorial service hours are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. On Friday (Oct. 20) at 10 a.m., a funeral mass will be held at St. Paul’s Parish (Bow and Arrow Street streets).

Pritsak memorial on Oct. 20

A memorial service of the life and career of Professor Omeljan Pritsak will be held Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in Appleton Chapel, Memorial Church. Pritsak passed away May 29 from heart failure.

One of the leading scholars of the 20th century in the fields of Turkology and Ukrainian history, Pritsak was appointed professor of linguistics and Turkology at Harvard in 1964 and soon became instrumental in the creation of a center for Ukrainian studies as well. Pritsak was the first Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of Ukrainian History, and co-founder and longtime director of the Ukrainian Research Institute. A reception will immediately follow the service.

Bloch memorial set for Oct. 21

A memorial service for Herbert Bloch, 95, Pope Professor of the Latin Language and Literature Emeritus, will be held Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at the First Church in Belmont, Mass., 404 Concord Ave. (corner of Concord and Common). Bloch died Sept. 6 in Cambridge, Mass.

Hadzi memorial service on Oct. 30

A memorial service for Dimitri Hadzi, professor of visual and environmental studies emeritus, will be held Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. at the Memorial Church. The service will be followed by a reception at the Harvard Faculty Club. Hadzi died April 16 in Boston.

Dunn memorial on Nov. 3

A memorial service for Charles W. Dunn, the Margaret Brooks Robinson Professor of Celtic Languages and Literatures Emeritus, will be held Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Church. Dunn died July 24 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston at the age of 90. Donations may be made to the Charles W. Dunn Book Fund, 110 Widener Library, Harvard University, Cambridge MA 02138.

Mosteller memorial set for Nov. 3

A memorial service celebrating the life and work of pioneering statistician Frederick Mosteller will be held Nov. 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Mass. A retired Harvard professor, Mosteller died July 23 at age 89.

The service is jointly sponsored by the Harvard Statistics and Biostatistics departments, Frontier Science, the Boston Chapter of the American Statistical Association, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. A reception will follow.
