Scholars in Medicine honors family, diversity

6 min read

The 50th Anniversary Program for Scholars in Medicine was established in 1995 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the admission of women to the Medical School, to acknowledge the important contributions of women to the School, and to enhance the quality and diversity of the Faculty of Medicine at all ranks.

Through the Scholars in Medicine Program, stipends are offered to junior faculty at the most vulnerable point in their academic careers, namely when young physicians and scientists must teach, do research, compete for grants, publish, and practice (if a clinical faculty member) at the same time they are assuming increased family or other responsibilities.

The fellowships can be used to pay for protected time to pursue academic work or to pay for additional laboratory assistance at a time when the junior faculty member does not yet have independent funding. The one-year fellowships, in the amount of $25,000, are intended to be an especially important part of Harvard Medical School’s efforts to increase the representation of women at the higher ranks in the Faculty of Medicine.
