Herzlinger Named Bush Adviser

Regina Herzlinger, the Nancy R. McPherson Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, has been named an adviser to presidential candidate George W. Bush regarding health care issues.

Howard Receives Allerton Medal

Professor of Dendrology Emeritus and former director of the Arnold Arboretum Richard A. Howard has been named the 1999 recipient of the Allerton Medal by the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kalaheo, Hawaii. The National Tropical Botanical Garden is dedicated to the conservation of tropical plant diversity, particularly rare and endangered species. The Allerton Medal is awarded to those who make significant contributions to the field. Howard’s citation acknowledges his decades of service in the advancement of tropical horticulture and the understanding of tropical plants.

Zolt Appointed Director of HLS International Tax Program

Eric Zolt, currently a professor of law at the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law, has been appointed director of the International Tax Program at Harvard Law School, Visiting Professor of Law, and John Harvey Gregory Lecturer on World Organizations, effective July 1, 2000.

Zolt’s research and teaching interests are in individual, corporate, and international taxation, and the tax systems of transition economies. He has received several teaching awards at UCLA, including the Rutter Award for Distinguished Teaching and UCLA’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

“Eric Zolt is a leading expert in designing tax systems for developing countries and countries making the transition to a market economy,” said Law School Dean Robert C. Clark. “His experience in private practice, academics, and government service makes him an excellent choice to direct the International Tax Program.”

New Masters Named for Eliot, Kirkland Houses

Dean of Harvard College Harry Lewis has announced the appointment of Lino Pertile, professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, and Anna Bensted, managing news editor with WBUR, the Boston NPR station, as the new Masters of Eliot House. The new Masters of Kirkland House are Tom Conley, professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, and Verena Conley, visiting professor of Literature.
