Nutrition is a balancing act

Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) nutrition expert Walter Willett spoke about the value of fruits and vegetables during an interview with CBS Boston that aired June 5, 2014. Willett, Fredrick John Stare Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition and chair of the Department of Nutrition, stated that while fruits and vegetables may not be as helpful in cancer prevention as previously thought, they do seem to protect against cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Blueberries, apples, peaches, and leafy green vegetables may be particularly beneficial. However, the key to a healthy diet is diversity, he said.

“Nutrition is about balance and variety. I think it’s analogous to an orchestra. You can’t just have one or two good pieces. You’ve got to have all the pieces together there playing in balance and harmony.”
