DRCLAS awards record number of internships, research grants
Undergraduate student research grant recipients
“Opening doors for undergraduate and graduate students to visit the region, through Harvard-supported research and internship opportunities, is one of the top priorities of our center,” points out Center Director John H. Coatsworth, the Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs.
DRCLAS awarded research travel grants to 30 undergraduates for honors thesis research and to 30 graduate students for preliminary dissertation research in Latin America.
This year, the center expanded its internship program to include Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru, while coordinating new programs with sponsors in Mexico and Venezuela. In each country, students work for organizations that are in line with their service or career interests. The center arranges host family-stays and once-a-week seminars or lectures. A total of 52 Harvard undergraduate and graduate students will take part in the internship program coordinated by the DRCLAS Chile Regional Office, with 30 going to Chile, nine to Argentina, four to Bolivia, five to Peru, and four to Venezuela. Overall, DRCLAS has provided grants to 78 undergraduate and 13 graduate and professional school students for internships in Latin America.
Undergraduates traveling to Brazil benefited from a gift from Jorge Paulo Lemann ’61 that supports research, internships, and study in Brazil. One undergraduate will carry out honors thesis research while two will have summer internships and five will enroll in the Harvard Summer School course in Portuguese and Brazilian culture in Rio de Janeiro.
DRCLAS will award Mellon Summer Field Research Travel Grants to three students in the History Department specializing in the study of the region.
Finally, the center also will award six summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships to students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS), the Graduate School of Education (GSE), and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) for intensive summer language training in Latin America or at other U.S. universities.
