Walkers wanted: University to back Walk for Hunger

The Office of Government, Community and Public Affairs will celebrate its 20th anniversary as a contributing donor on behalf of Harvard faculty, staff, students, and retirees who participate in Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger (May 7). Harvard will give 50 cents for each mile walked or hour volunteered by University affiliates.

Earth fair, Harvard flair

The Undergraduate Environmental Action Committee is sponsoring a free Earth Day Fair on April 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Winthrop House Courtyard (between Memorial Drive and Mill Street). More than a dozen student groups and visiting organizations will be represented. The fair will feature free food and prizes from environmentally conscious sponsors, and complimentary tune-ups from Quad Bikes, Harvard’s nonprofit bicycle shop and resource. EALS accepting Yong K. Kim prize submissions

The East Asian Legal Studies (EALS) program of Harvard Law School (HLS) is now accepting submissions for the Yong K. Kim ’95 Memorial Prize. The prize is awarded to the author of the best paper concerning the law or legal history of the nations and peoples of East Asia or regarding issues of law as it pertains to U.S.-East Asia relations. The winning author will embody Kim’s interest in and enthusiasm for fostering U.S.-East Asian understanding.

Submissions can be written in conjunction with a course, seminar, or independent study project at HLS. The prize includes a cash award and will be announced at Commencement.

Entrants should send two copies of the paper to the EALS office (Pound Hall 426, HLS) by May 5. The author’s name, class, e-mail address, and phone number should be included.

Association of Black Harvard Women pays tribute to community commitment

Nine African Americans from Harvard and beyond were honored for their extraordinary commitments to their communities this past Saturday (April 15) at the eighth annual Tribute to Black Men event at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston. The celebratory event was sponsored by the Association of Black Harvard Women and will be featured in an upcoming issue of Ebony Magazine.

Honorees included nationally renowned community leader John Hope Bryant, the chairman, founder, and CEO of OperationHOPE (named the Vanguard Award winner), and J. Lorand Matory, Harvard professor of anthropology and of African and African-American Studies (selected as the Faculty Award winner). Harvard students who were honored included Kwame Owusu-Kesse, Lawrence Adjah, and Tracy Tyrone Moore II, together selected as the senior class winners; Jon E. Gentry, junior class winner; Ofole Mgbako, sophomore class winner; and Xavier Del Rosario, freshman class winner. Ugo Nduaguba, a senior at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics, was named the high school honoree.

HUCTW members eligible for child-care fellowships

Members of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers (HUCTW) bargaining unit who have children are invited to apply for a HUCTW/Harvard Childcare Fellowship. To be eligible, the child or children must be under 14 years of age and in the care of a licensed child-care center, family provider, after-school program, summer camp, vacation camp, or in-home provider with a social security or tax ID number.
