Orchestra seeks players, to hold auditions

The Harvard Summer School Orchestra is holding open auditions June 24-26 from 5 to 9 p.m. in Lowell Hall (Rooms B12 and B13). Viola, bass, and brass musicians are especially encouraged to audition, which will consist of playing one prepared piece and some sight-reading. Pops rehearsals to begin in June

Wind, brass, and percussion musicians interested in playing with the Harvard Summer Pops Band are invited to attend rehearsals from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. each Wednesday from June 25 to July 23 in Lowell Hall. Directed by Tom Everett, the band will hold concerts July 30 at 4 p.m. in Harvard Yard, and Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Hatch Shell. No auditions are required, and it is recommended that all players bring a folding music stand to rehearsals.

Senior wins Cooke award

Harvard senior Francesca J. Petrosino has been selected a recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Awards for Graduate Education. Petrosino joins 42 other award winners selected to receive up to $50,000 per year to complete their graduate or professional degree.

Retsinas enters Housing Hall of Fame

Lecturer in Urban Planning Nicolas P. Retsinas, director of Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, was formally inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame on May 10. Retsinas was honored at the National Housing Center – the Washington, D.C.-based headquarters of the National Association of Home Builders – in an induction ceremony during the association’s recent board of directors meeting.

Galbraith’s homestead, career honored

To honor the homestead of John Kenneth Galbraith, the Paul M. Warburg Professor of Economics Emeritus, community leaders of Dutton, Ontario, have erected a monument to mark the family farm (near Dutton) where Galbraith was born and lived part of his younger life. Canadian artist Jenny Phillips spearheaded the project – an Inuit rock sculpture called an inuksuk. The nearly 7-foot monument also includes a plaque describing Galbraith’s career and accomplishments.

Lin selected for international design internship

EDAW, a leading land-based planning and design firm, has selected architecture and urban design student Michelle Lin to participate in its 23rd annual Summer Student Program. An international group of 15 students of landscape architecture, architecture, urban planning, economics, and environmental science were chosen to participate in the paid internship.

Lin will spend eight to ten weeks working in EDAW’s San Francisco office, before heading to China to plan and design a sustainable community in the outskirts of Beijing.
