Faculty Council notice for Sept. 20

2 min read

At its first meeting of the year, the Faculty Council elected a Docket Committee for 2001-02 as follows: Professors Jay Jasanoff (linguistics), Robert Kirshner (astronomy), and Peter Marsden (sociology), with Dean Jeremy R. Knowles (chemistry and chemical biology) serving as chair (ex officio). The council also agreed to propose Professor Roderick MacFarquhar (government) as parliamentarian for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for 2001-02.

At the beginning of the meeting, the council reviewed various organizational matters, and received reports on recent professorial and administrative appointments. The council also considered a draft agenda for the October Faculty Meeting (the preliminary docket deadline for the Oct. 16 Faculty Meeting is 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 1). Additionally, Dean Knowles provided the council with his own view of the year ahead.

The council then turned its attention to two motions that have been submitted for the October faculty meeting. The first would amend the Rules of Faculty Procedure to provide for a 5:30 p.m. adjournment hour on a regular basis for all faculty meetings.

For the consideration of the second motion professors P. Kuhn (East Asian languages and civilizations) and J. Engell (English and American literature and language) joined the council. The motion proposed by professors Kuhn and Engell reaffirms the faculty’s 1970 Resolution on Rights and Responsibilities, and directs the faculty’s administrative boards to heed the intent of that resolution.
