As the population ages, demand for health care will increase, and rising rates of alcohol use in older adults may create additional challenges to an already burdened health care system.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trends in alcohol use in older adults<\/h2>\n<p>Alcohol use in older adults has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5439499\/\">trending upward over the years<\/a>, particularly among women. One\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5710229\/\">epidemiologic survey<\/a>\u00a0determined that in the United States between 2001 and 2013, among people 65 and older, the rate of alcohol use disorder increased 107 percent. The University of Michigan\u2019s 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyagingpoll.org\/reports-more\/report\/alcohol-use-among-older-adults?utm_source=STAT+Newsletters&amp;utm_campaign=563d58cc66-MR_COPY_02&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_8cab1d7961-563d58cc66-150897321\">National Poll on Healthy Aging<\/a>\u00a0found that although the majority of older adults surveyed were drinking alcohol at low to moderate levels, there was a subset of older adults exceeding the recommended guidelines for alcohol use. In particular, 20 percent of respondents drank alcohol four or more times per week; 27 percent reported having six or more drinks on at least one occasion in the past year; and 7 percent reported alcohol-related blackouts.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Negative effects of alcohol use in older adults<\/h2>\n<p>Drinking too much alcohol can have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohols-effects-health\/alcohols-effects-body\">negative physical and mental health consequences<\/a>, including heart and liver problems, memory issues, mood disorders, as well as an increased risk of cancer and a weakened immune system.
