Noting the upcoming 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Clarke called on students to continue King\u2019s legacy by rising above the \u201cpolitics of hatred\u201d and dedicating themselves to careers that strengthen democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we have an obligation to make sure that the generation behind us inherits a world that is better than what we have today,\u201d Clarke said. \u201cA Harvard degree carries with it tremendous power and tremendous possibility. I encourage each of you to think about how you can use your degree to go out into the world and make change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One alumna who already has is Rise founder Amanda Nguyen \u201913, who delivered a simple but compelling message: \u201cHope is contagious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rape survivor who had to struggle to navigate the justice system in its aftermath, Nguyen set out to rewrite the law to protect the civil rights of the country\u2019s estimated 25 million rape survivors. In 2016, Congress passed her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/house-bill\/5578\/text\">Sexual Assault Survivors\u2019 Bill of Rights<\/a> \u2014 making it only the 21st bill in modern history approved unanimously by both the House and Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the power in you to make a difference,\u201d said Nguyen, urging attendees not to give in to activism fatigue. \u201cThere are so many things now that make us feel powerless, but no one can make you feel powerless when we come together. Also participating were Richard Kelley \u201910, senior associate at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcaffordablelaw.org\/\">DC Affordable Law Firm<\/a>, a nonprofit that represents underserved residents in Washington, D.C.; Beryl C.D. Lipton \u201910, projects editor and senior reporter at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muckrock.com\/\">MuckRock<\/a>, a collaborative news site that helps people file, track, and share public records requests; Sarah Lockridge-Steckel \u201909, founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/changeiscollective.org\/\">The Collective<\/a>, which invests in workforce development as a means of alleviating poverty among young adults in Memphis, Tenn.; Noting the upcoming 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Clarke called on students to continue King\u2019s legacy by rising above the \u201cpolitics of hatred\u201d and dedicating themselves to careers that strengthen democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we have an obligation to make sure that the generation behind us inherits a world that is better than what we have today,\u201d Clarke said. \u201cA Harvard degree carries with it tremendous power and tremendous possibility. Noting the upcoming 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., Clarke called on students to continue King\u2019s legacy by rising above the \u201cpolitics of hatred\u201d and dedicating themselves to careers that strengthen democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we have an obligation to make sure that the generation behind us inherits a world that is better than what we have today,\u201d Clarke said. \u201cA Harvard degree carries with it tremendous power and tremendous possibility. I encourage each of you to think about how you can use your degree to go out into the world and make change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One alumna who already has is Rise founder Amanda Nguyen \u201913, who delivered a simple but compelling message: \u201cHope is contagious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rape survivor who had to struggle to navigate the justice system in its aftermath, Nguyen set out to rewrite the law to protect the civil rights of the country\u2019s estimated 25 million rape survivors. In 2016, Congress passed her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/house-bill\/5578\/text\">Sexual Assault Survivors\u2019 Bill of Rights<\/a> \u2014 making it only the 21st bill in modern history approved unanimously by both the House and Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the power in you to make a difference,\u201d said Nguyen, urging attendees not to give in to activism fatigue. \u201cThere are so many things now that make us feel powerless, but no one can make you feel powerless when we come together.
