It will include 22 beds that are gender-neutral. Officials said it\u2019s the nation\u2019s first student-run overnight shelter specifically set aside for that age group.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard students will run the shelter. Isabelle Yang \u201917, whose concentration is in chemistry, is one of them. As the shelter\u2019s student director, she\u2019ll make sure it\u2019s well-staffed. On any given day, she said, there will be 21 students working during dinner or breakfast shifts, in the evening and overnight. To get the place up and running, about 150 students volunteers per year are needed.<\/p>\n<p>Yang will work Saturday nights at the shelter. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine a better way to spend my weekend,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Called <a href=\"http:\/\/y2yharvardsquare.org\/\">Y2Y Harvard Square<\/a>, a program of the <a href=\"http:\/\/pbha.org\/\">Phillips Brooks House Association<\/a>, a nonprofit public service organization at Harvard, the project was funded with $1.3 million. Elizabeth Warren, the keynote speaker, talked about how the shelter meets a need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNationwide, we have 39,000 homeless youth on any given night in this country,\u201d said Warren. \u201cAn estimated 20 to 40 percent of those youth are LGBTQ, and that means it\u2019s a pretty tough street out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Warren commended Greenberg and Rosenkrantz for taking the initiative to solve a problem they encountered while they were at Harvard. Both graduated last year, Rosenkrantz in social and cognitive neuroscience and Greenberg in history and literature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey saw a problem and they found a way to fix it,\u201d Warren said. \u201cThey had a vision, led by example and gathered people around it. It\u2019s together that we make each other stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calling the project a \u201ctrue community effort,\u201d Rosenkrantz and Greenberg thanked a long list of people, from construction companies to city officials to advocates for the homeless. To get the place up and running, about 150 students volunteers per year are needed.<\/p>\n<p>Yang will work Saturday nights at the shelter. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine a better way to spend my weekend,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Called <a href=\"http:\/\/y2yharvardsquare.org\/\">Y2Y Harvard Square<\/a>, a program of the <a href=\"http:\/\/pbha.org\/\">Phillips Brooks House Association<\/a>, a nonprofit public service organization at Harvard, the project was funded with $1.3 million. The project value is close to $2 million, said Greenberg, but donations helped reduce the cost.<\/p>\n\r\n\t\n\n\t<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone  size-full is-resized\"><img src=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/110615_shelter_041_570x381.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-176017\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Elizabeth Warren (left) commended Greenberg and Rosenkrantz on their work. \u201cThey saw a problem and they found a way to fix it,\u201d she said. Elizabeth Warren, the keynote speaker, talked about how the shelter meets a need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNationwide, we have 39,000 homeless youth on any given night in this country,\u201d said Warren. \u201cAn estimated 20 to 40 percent of those youth are LGBTQ, and that means it\u2019s a pretty tough street out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Warren commended Greenberg and Rosenkrantz for taking the initiative to solve a problem they encountered while they were at Harvard. Both graduated last year, Rosenkrantz in social and cognitive neuroscience and Greenberg in history and literature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey saw a problem and they found a way to fix it,\u201d Warren said. \u201cThey had a vision, led by example and gathered people around it. It\u2019s together that we make each other stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calling the project a \u201ctrue community effort,\u201d Rosenkrantz and Greenberg thanked a long list of people, from construction companies to city officials to advocates for the homeless.
