At a Meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on May 3, 2011, the Minute honoring the life and service of the late Barrington Moore, Jr., retired Senior Research Fellow in the Russian Research Center and Senior Lecturer on Sociology, was placed upon the records. Moore was a leader in comparative historical sociology and comparative politics.

Cabot Professor of English Literature Emeritus, was placed upon the records. Evans was the foremost Shakespearean textual scholar of his day.
John Case Nemiah, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at both Harvard Medical School and Dartmouth Medical School, died on May, 11 2009, at the age of 90, in Nashua, New Hampshire. Widely beloved as a teacher, editor, academic leader and friend, he served as the Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Beth Israel Hospital from 1968 to 1985.
On November 25, 2009, Dr. Robert Moors Smith died two weeks before he would have been 97. A pioneer of modern anesthesia practice, he was considered the “Father of Pediatric Anesthesiology” in the United States.
Harvey Goldman, professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Division of Health Sciences and Technology, died on April 6, 2009, from complications of a hematologic disorder. Goldman was not only a master educator, but also an outstanding surgical pathologist and investigator in the field of gastrointestinal pathology.

Harvard Theatre Collection Curator Fredric Woodbridge Wilson died May 15 of pancreatic cancer.
Michael Shannon, the first African-American full professor of pediatrics in Harvard Medical School’s history, died on March 10, 2009, at the age of 55. At Children’s Hospital Boston, Shannon directed the largest pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program in the country and trained subsequent leaders in toxicology and emergency medicine.
Peter Emanuel Sifneos, professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, died at his home in Belmont on Dec. 9, 2008, at the age of 88. He was an internationally renowned pioneer in the areas of short-term psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine.
William “Bill” Avison Meissner, former Harvard Medical School clinical professor of pathology and emeritus professor of pathology at the New England Deaconess Hospital, died on Dec. 6, 2008, at age 95. Meissner’s expertise was in thyroid, soft tissue, and oropharyngeal tumors.

A celebration honoring the life of Allan Richard Robinson, the Gordon McKay Professor of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Emeritus in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, will be held at the Memorial Church on May 7 (2 p.m.).

Professor Nathan Keyfitz dies at 96
Nathan Keyfitz, professor of demography and sociology at Harvard from 1972 to 1983, recently died at the age of 96. Keyfitz was a leader in the field of mathematical demography and a pioneer in the application of mathematical tools to the study of population characteristics.
HBS’s J. Sterling Livingston dies at 93
J. Sterling Livingston, a retired professor at Harvard Business School (HBS), died on Feb. 14 from multiple organ failure. He was 93.

A service in memory of James Stemble Duesenberry, the William Joseph Maier Professor of Money and Banking Emeritus, will take place at the Memorial Church on April 8 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow at Loeb House at 17 Quincy St.
Former director of computer services, Lewis Law dies, at 77
Lewis (Lew) Law, 77, former director of computer services for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), died in Belmont on Feb. 14 after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for many years.
At a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on Dec. 15, 2009, the minute honoring the life and service of the late Henry Ehrenreich, Clowes Professor of Science Emeritus, was placed upon the records. Ehrenreich was a prominent contributor to the science and the economics of alternative energy sources, especially solar and wind.

Babette Samelson Whipple, former psychology researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), died on Dec. 18, 2009, after a short illness. She was 91.
At a Meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on May 6, 2008, the Minute honoring the life and service of the late Craig Hugh Smyth, Director of Villa I Tatti Professor of Fine Arts, Emeritus, was placed upon the records. Smyth was a promoter of the study and practice of art conservation.
