Mobile kiosk links Harvard arts events; inspires digital artists
Passersby will soon be able to access current cultural events at Harvard through the Mobile Information Unit, an innovative, cross-disciplinary research project designed and fabricated by Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) students.

The Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies is now accepting submissions for its 2009 Noma-Reischauer Prizes in Japanese Studies, given to the undergraduate and graduate students with the best essays on Japan-related topics. The submission deadline is June 30, and $3,000 will be awarded for the best graduate student essay and $2,000 for the best undergraduate student essay.

Semitic Museum to host tour of ‘The Houses of Ancient Israel’
The Semitic Museum will host a lunchtime tour of “The Houses of Ancient Israel: Domestic, Royal, Divine” on May 21 at 12:15 p.m., offering a view of life in an ancient Near Eastern agricultural society. The exhibit — which displays family dwellings, palaces, and temples — is arranged in terms of the different types of ancient Israeli buildings and houses that were associated with the different levels of society.
Despite economy, Daffodil Days still comes up roses
With good news comes the bad news. This year’s Daffodil Days, held on March 16, raised $51,726 in funds for the American Cancer Society — the first time in its 22-year history that this year’s total did not surpass the previous year’s total ($53,329). However, with the economic downturn taken into consideration, “I still think we did fabulously,” said Daffodil Days coordinator Julie Russell.
Israelite bread-making discussion at the Semitic Museum
On Thursday (April 23), the Semitic Museum will host half-hour discussions at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. (appropriate for grades three through six) on how ancient Israelites made bread — from planting to eating — and explore everyday life of the average villager 2,700 years ago. Students will also have the opportunity to handle original ceramic fragments and try to match them with whole vessels on display. The Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA) will host its sixth annual Auction for the Summer Urban Program at the Cambridge Queen’s Head Pub (45 Quincy Street) on April 28 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event will support PBHA’s 12 summer camps, which serve more than 900 children and youth in Boston and Cambridge.
Former prime minister of Spain explores ‘Role of Europe’
Jose Maria Aznar, the prime minister of Spain from 1996 to 2004, will deliver a lecture titled “The Role of Europe in the Geopolitical Context” at 5 p.m. Wednesday (April 15) in the Belfer Center’s Starr Auditorium at Harvard Kennedy School.

The Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA) will host its sixth annual auction for the Summer Urban Program at the Cambridge Queen’s Head Pub (45 Quincy Street) on April 28 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event will support PBHA’s 12 summer camps, which serve more than 900 children and youth in Boston and Cambridge. The silent auction will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature over 80 items, hors d’oeuvres, two complimentary drinks, and live jazz. The live auction of 10 items will begin at 7:30 p.m.
