Gough named Joseph Pulitzer, Jr. Professor of Modern Art
Maria Gough, a scholar of the Soviet and Russian avant-garde, has been appointed Joseph Pulitzer, Jr. Professor of Modern Art in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1, 2009.
Mark E. Richard named professor of philosophy
Mark E. Richard, who specializes in the philosophy of language, philosophical logic, and metaphysics and epistemology, has been named professor of philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, effective July 1, 2010.

Glazer to give Lipset lecture, Nov. 4
Nathan Glazer will give the Seymour Martin Lipset Memorial Lecture at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 4. Glazer’s talk is titled, “Democracy and Diversity: Dealing with Deep Divides.”
Caroline Elkins named professor of history
Historian Caroline Elkins, who received a Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for her book “Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya,” has been named professor of history at Harvard University.
Five FAS faculty members receive tenure
Five FAS faculty members have been named full professors with tenure.
Kirwan ’79, M.P.P. ’84, appointed FAS dean for administration and finance
Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Dean Michael D. Smith Sept. 25 announced the appointment of Leslie Kirwan as the new FAS dean for administration and finance, effective Nov. 2, 2009. A graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Kennedy School, Kirwan has served as the secretary of administration and finance for the commonwealth of Massachusetts since 2007.
Assistant Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology Kirsten Bomblies is among 70 new faculty members who are joining the University’s various Schools this year. With the start of the new year, Harvard has hired 41 new assistant professors, six associate professors, and 23 new full professors, and promoted 20 existing faculty members to tenured professor positions.
Maher memorial service Sept. 25
A memorial service for Brendan A. Maher, the Emeritus Edward C Henderson Professor of the Psychology of Personality in the Department of Psychology, will be held on Sept. 25.
Faculty Council meeting held Sept.16
At its second meeting of the year on Sept. 16, the Faculty Council considered candidates for Parliamentarian for 2009-2010 and reviewed a draft of the Dean’s Annual Letter to the Faculty.
Robert T. McCluskey, a pioneer in the field of immunopathology, died June 29, 2006 at the age of 83. McCluskey was a leader in academic pathology and nephrology and his major scientific contributions were related to the immunopathogenesis of renal diseases.
FAS names six full professors with tenure
From a professor of comparative literature to a professor of Chinese history, the FAS has announced six new tenured professors.
Service for Ernest May, Sept. 23
A memorial service for Ernest May, a renowned historian of international relations and foreign policy and professor of history, will be held Sept. 23, in Memorial Church.
The veterinary profession lost one of its most influential and respected leaders and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists lost its founder, Thomas Carlyle Jones, who died at the age of 95.
In a celebratory forum in Lowell Lecture Hall Sept. 3, Harvard President Drew Faust and others explain and extol Harvard’s new General Education requirements, which take effect this year with the Class of 2013.

A memorial service will for Daniel Tosteson will be held at the Memorial Church, Harvard Yard, on Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.
Harvard attorney Frank J. Connors Jr. passes away
Frank J. Connors Jr., an in-house attorney at Harvard for the past 24 years, died on Aug. 14.
