Applying for credentials

Media credentialing for 2014 Harvard College Class Day and Harvard University Commencement is not yet open. Please revisit this page in May 2014 to apply.

HPAC credentials are required for press coverage of all Commencement events in Harvard Yard and Tercentenary Theatre. HPAC credentials are not good for access to Commencement-related events at Harvard’s graduate and professional schools nor do they provide access to the degree ceremonies for the undergraduate houses.

Photo identification is required to pick up credentials. Freelance journalists must provide letters assigning them to cover a 2014 Commencement event, written on the news organization’s letterhead, when credentials are requested. Letters should be faxed attn: Commencement credentials to 617-495-0754 or emailed to kevin_galvin@harvard.edu.

Credential pick-up

Credentials may be picked up in the Harvard Events & Information Center in the arcade level of Holyoke Center (1350 Massachusetts Avenue) on Wednesday, May 28 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and on Thursday, May 29 from 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Press releases, various speech texts, and general event information will be available. The designated press entrance to Harvard Yard and Tercentenary Theatre  for Commencement will be Wadsworth Gate, located on Massachusetts Ave. between Dudley House and Wadsworth House. Wadsworth Gate is immediately across from Holyoke Center where press credentials may be picked up in the Events & Information Center.

All HPAC-credentialed media will be admitted to Harvard Yard and Tercentenary Theatre. Designated seating for working media in Tercentenary Theatre located will be in B1 for photographers on Class Day, and sections D1 for reporters and  B1 for photographers only on Commencement. Please note that seating is limited in these sections, is not guaranteed and is limited to one representative per media organization for each section.

Please note: Credentialed media looking to sit in section D1 on Commencement Day for the Morning Exercises must be in place by 8:15 AM at the latest. Credentialed media are required to remain in the designated press areas for the duration of the ceremonies.

Portions of Harvard College Class Day and Harvard University Commencement may be made available via satellite. Coordinates  and further information can be provided upon request.

On Class Day (May 28) and Commencement Day (May 29), all television coverage inside the Tercentenary Theatre will be limited to the five-camera pool feed provided by the University. No videographer will be allowed inside Tercentenary Theatre at any time. Audio and video signals will be available in the basement of Memorial Church. The pool feed will be distributed through an audio/video distribution amplifier. Audio will be provided without voiceover commentary, and video will be provided without character generation or other IDs. There will be a monitor displaying the live broadcast for reference during both the morning and afternoon ceremonies. Reporters and technicians are responsible for their own recording devices and connectors (BNC and XLR).

On Commencement Day, there will be roped-off photo areas opposite Massachusetts Hall and the John Harvard statue in Harvard Yard during the morning procession. Videographers are requested to remain in these areas and not to follow, interfere with, or cross the line of march. NOTE: Television crews interfering at any time with the procession or other Commencement activities will be subject to the immediate loss of credentials.

Parking for television trucks is available on Oxford Street on May 29 and 30, but space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking is not guaranteed. Please do not attempt to drive onto the Harvard campus. See the full Commencement Day press schedule.

Still photographers

HPAC’s facilities for electronic photo transmission are limited. It is necessary to make arrangements for phone lines well in advance of Commencement.

Photographers may shoot from the reserved press areas in section B1 on Class Day and Commencement Day, space permitting. Ladders and tripods are not permitted.

No media will be permitted in the aisles of the Theatre during the Exercises and roaming is not permitted.
