This month in Harvard history

Sept. 24, 1638 - John Harvard dies "of a Consumption" in Charlestown, leaving his library (329 titles, over 400 volumes) and half of his estate (ca. £780) to the fledgling College in Cambridge.

Sept. 17, 1701 - Increase Mather steps down as President.

Sept. 1, 1779 - The College holds £15,000 in continental loan certificates and £600 in state treasury notes.

Sept. 20, 1781 - The Harvard Corporation elects Joseph Willard, Class of 1765, as Harvard's 12th President.

Sept. 25, 1804 - President Joseph Willard dies in office.

September 1871 - Under the direction of Horticulture Professor Francis Parkman, Class of 1844 (better known for his work as an American historian), greenhouses are built for the Bussey Institution on grounds adjacent to those that become part of the Arnold Arboretum in 1872.
