Four Harvard professors were recently named recipients of the 81st annual John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation's United States and Canadian competition. Paul L. Harris, professor of education; Marc D. Hauser, professor of psychology; John Huehnergard, professor of Semitic philology; and Gardner Cowles Associate Professor of the History of Art and Architecture Eugene Y. Wang join 182 other scholars, artists, and scientists to be selected.

This year, more than 3,000 candidates applied for awards totaling over $7 million. Fellows are appointed on the basis of "distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment."

Royal Society elects HBS professor

Bishop William E. Lawrence University Professor Michael E. Porter has been elected an honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in recognition of his "outstanding contributions" to the field of competitive strategy as well as his achievements in public service. The society was founded in 1783 by royal charter for the "advancement of learning and useful knowledge."

Miller Center awards fellowship to Osman

The University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs has selected Graduate School of Arts and Sciences student Suleiman Osman as one of its eight contemporary history, public policy, and American politics fellows. The fellowship awards Osman a one-year $18,000 grant to complete his dissertation: "The Birth of Postmodern New York: Gentrification, Post industrialization and Race in South Brooklyn, 1950-1980."

Harvard junior named Truman Scholar

Harvard junior Amar Chopra Bakshi has received a Truman Scholarship for his commitment to public service. A social studies and visual and environmental studies concentrator, Bakshi has worked extensively with youth in Boston, Washington, D.C., and India, and is the founder of Aina Arts, an international nonprofit that integrates local artists into underprivileged schools. He intends to develop the organization while pursuing a joint Ed.M./M.P.P. in international education.
