Fromm Foundation announces 2004 commissions

The board of directors of the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University recently announced the names of 12 composers selected to receive 2004 commissions. These composers were chosen from 207 applicants.

This year's commission recipients are Gordon Beeferman of New York City; Martin Brody of Cambridge, Mass.; Paul Dickinson of Conway, Ark.; David Froom of California, Md.; Elliott Gyger of Cambridge, Mass.; Sungji Hong of Yongin-Shi, South Korea; Panayiotis Kokoras of Katerini, Greece; Massimo Lauricella of Genova, Italy; Liza Lim of South Brisbane, Australia; Padma Newsome of New York City; Richard Teitelbaum of Bearsville, N.Y.; and Scott Wheeler of North Reading, Mass.

These commissions represent one of the principal ways that the Fromm Music Foundation seeks to strengthen composition and to bring contemporary concert music closer to the public. In addition to the commissioning fee of $10,000, a subsidy is available for the ensemble performing the premiere of the commissioned work. Among a number of other projects, the Fromm Music Foundation sponsors the annual Fromm Contemporary Music Series at Harvard and supports the Festival of Contemporary Music at Tanglewood.

Applications for commissions are reviewed on an annual basis. The annual deadline for proposals is June 1. Requests for guidelines should be sent to the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard, Department of Music, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138.
