S. Allen Counter appointed honorary consul general of Sweden
Associate Professor of Neurology S. Allen Counter has been appointed honorary consul general of Sweden in Boston and New England by the Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and the ambassador to the United States, Jan Eliasson. Counter, who is the director of the Harvard Foundation, will represent Sweden in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.
"Sweden is a great nation with a respected tradition of peace, objectivity, and humanitarianism," said Counter. "I am pleased to represent the people of Sweden in my native land."
Counter received his doctor of medical science degree from Sweden's prestigious Karolinska Nobel Institute, where he is presently appointed visiting professor. Counter is the first African American to be appointed consul of Sweden in an American city. An appointment ceremony, officiated by Ambassador Eliasson, will be held today (Sept. 30) in University Hall in Harvard Yard.
Sevcenko elected member of Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei
Ihor Sevcenko, Dumbarton Oaks Professor of Byzantine History and Literature Emeritus, was elected a foreign member of the Class of Moral, Historical, and Philological Sciences of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei on July 28.
