Volunteers honored with Mack I. Davis II Awards
Cambridge School Volunteers Inc. (CSV) honored approximately 1,000 of its volunteers who served in kindergarten through grade 12 of the Cambridge Public Schools (CPS) during the 2003-04 school year at a reception hosted by Harvard University at the Faculty Club on May 5. Together, these volunteers provided more than 60,000 hours of individualized academic services to Cambridge youth. After a welcome by CSV board President Andrew J. Bernstein; CPS superintendent Thomas Fowler-Finn; Cambridge Mayor Michael Sullivan; and Manuel Davis, son of Mack I. Davis, longevity certificates were awarded by CSV Executive Director Jennifer Singh to those who had volunteered for four, five, 10, and 15 years.
Awards honoring the late Mack I. Davis II, a Harvard administrator with an extraordinary record of public service, including membership on the CSV board of directors, were presented to Allen Mintz, Mary Palaez, and Catharina Stassen (Cambridge Rindge and Latin); Marilyn Allen (Intergenerational Math Program, Kennedy-Longfellow School); Mary Jo Benjamin (Morse School); Marie La Rosa (Tobin School); Sandy Levine (Intergenerational Literacy Program, Baldwin School); Allison Looney (Key Pals, Kennedy-Longfellow School); and Robert Wolf (Intergenerational Literacy Program and after-school math, Graham and Parks School).
Awards were also presented to the following corporations whose employees participate in CSV team-based projects in CPS: Cambridge Systematics, Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Genzyme Corp., BookPALS, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Hyatt Regency Cambridge, IBM, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Stride Rite Corp., and Volpe National Transportation Systems Center.
