This month in Harvard history

March 3, 1906 - The "Harvard University Gazette" (not yet in tabloid format) registers for second-class mailings at the Boston Post Office.

March 1952 - The Harvard Corporation votes to appropriate $1 million from the residuary bequest of Allston Burr, Class of 1889, to establish an Allston Burr Tutorial Fund. Income from the fund will pay the salaries of some House-based tutors and advisers, including eight Allston Burr Senior Tutors, who are mainly responsible for overseeing the new House-based advising and tutoring system that begins in September.

Ca. March 1953 - Harvard announces the creation of the Gordon McKay Scholarships, the first scholarships linked to a student's intended field of concentration (in this case, Applied Sciences). Members of the Class of 1957, who arrive in the fall, will be the first recipients.

March 25, 1956 - The 90-minute CBS television program "Omnibus" spotlights Harvard.
