Daniels named director of international student programs

Helaine Daniels, formerly of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Oxfam, Mobil Oil Africa, and the Boston Globe, has been named director of international student programs at the Kennedy School of Government, Senior Associate Dean Joseph McCarthy announced.

Daniels will be responsible for developing a strategic plan for international student programs, which will focus on the recruitment of outstanding students, fundraising to ensure that international students will be able to complete their studies, and facilitating students' stay at the Kennedy School.

Evans named 'All Academic Team' judge

David L. Evans, senior admissions officer at Harvard College, has been appointed by USA Today as one of a small group of judges to select its annual high school "All Academic Team." Evans has also been selected by the Bill Gates Millennium Foundation as a judge for scholarships. Both the foundation and USA Today provide financial support and educational opportunities for American students of high academic achievement and economic need.

Three receive 2002-03 Dibner Fellowships

The Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) has awarded fellowships to three Harvard doctoral candidates in the Department of the History of Science.

As Dibner Fellows, Federica La Nave will continue her research on the concept of belief in the truth of a mathematical proposition during four different historical periods. Grace Y. Shen, who plans to receive her Ph.D. in spring of 2004, will work on her thesis, "Unearthing the Nation: Modern Geology and National Identity in Republican China, 1911-1949." Maria-Margarita Vicedo-Castello will continue her thesis titled "Human Nature and Mother Love: A History of the Maternal Instinct."

The Dibner Institute is an international center for advanced research in the history of science and technology. Each year the institute hosts senior, postdoctoral, and graduate student fellows, as well as symposia, conferences, lectures, and workshops.
