The Gerald M. McCue Professsor of Architecture is established

President Lawrence H. Summers and Peter G. Rowe, dean of the Faculty of Design, are pleased to announce that the President and Fellows of Harvard College have established the Gerald M. McCue Professorship of Architecture in the Faculty of Design. The chair has been endowed by a generous gift from Frank Stanton to advance design education at Harvard and to honor Gerald McCue, the John D. Dunlop Professor Emeritus and former dean of the Faculty of Design for his distinguished contributions to education and professional practice.

McCue, FAIA, was invited to join Harvard in 1976 as professor of architecture and urban design. He served as chairman of the Department of Architecture and associate dean of the Faculty of Design through 1980, and at that time was named dean of the faculty, a position he held until 1992. McCue brought many leading designers and practitioners to the School. He succeeded in raising endowments for key professorships and expanded the School's post-professional and doctoral programs.

Frank Stanton (Ph.D., Ohio State University) served as president of CBS Inc. from 1946 to 1973. During this period he led CBS in developing the nation's leading radio and television networks. He received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University in 1985.

Stanton is the first non-Harvard alumnus since the 19th century to have been elected to the Board of Overseers of Harvard College. In honoring McCue, Stanton hopes to create an enduring foundation for design education of the highest order.
