James Ackerman to receive Balzan Prize

James Ackerman, the Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Fine Arts Emeritus, has been selected by the International Balzan Foundation as the recipient of the Balzan Prize 2001 for the History of Architecture (including town planning and landscape design). Ackerman will receive the award, ranked among the most prestigious in the world for art, moral science, and medicine, among other disciplines, at a Nov. 9 ceremony in Bern, Switzerland.

Herbert C. Kelman awarded Ben-Gurion Medal

Herbert C. Kelman, the Richard Clarke Cabot Research Professor of Social Ethics, received the Ben-Gurion Medal from the president of the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, Israel, on June 18. The medal was inscribed: "with gratitude for your work towards peace." It was presented during an international conference titled "Oslo: A Reassessment of the Process and New Directions," at which Professor Kelman gave the opening address.

Wentworth Institute honors Moffatt

David B. Moffatt, chief of operations to the Harvard Business School (HBS), received an honorary doctor of engineering technology from the Wentworth Institute of Technology on May 20. As the chief of operations, Moffatt is responsible for the management of 1.4 million square feet of residential school facilities. He received the degree for a lifetime of service and leadership in the corporate, civic, and educational communities.

Laird receives David Award

Nan M. Laird, professor of biostatistics at the School of Public Health (SPH), received the newly established F.N. David Award at the 2001 Joint Statistical Meetings held last month in Atlanta. Jointly sponsored by the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) and the Caucus for Women in Statistics, the award is granted to a female statistician who serves as a role model to other women in the field through excellence in research, leadership, and service to professional societies.

The award, named after Florence Nightingale David, an accomplished statistician, will be awarded biannually and consists of a plaque and cash award.

Janos Kornai receives an honorary degree

Janos Kornai, the Allie S. Freed Professor of Economics, received an honorary doctorate degree from the Stockholm School of Economics on Sept. 7. This was the ninth honorary degree conferred on Professor Kornai. He has received similar honors from universities in Amsterdam, Budapest, London, and Paris.
