Volunteer opportunities in Boston schools

Boston Partners in Education is looking for volunteers to tutor kindergarten students one-on-one in the Boston Public School system. For 35 years, Boston Partners has been helping inner-city schoolchildren strengthen their academic skills and self-esteem. Lewis to be guest of honor

Elma Lewis, pioneering arts activist, educator, and African-American community leader for more than 50 years, has been named the 2000-01 Luise Vosgerchian Teaching Award recipient, which carries an honorarium of $10,000 and is administered by the Office for the Arts at Harvard. Lewis will be the guest of honor at a dinner at Harvard on Tuesday, April 17, which will also be the occasion for a roundtable discussion with the University's undergraduate arts leaders.

Quantum talk

Eric J. Heller, professor of chemistry and physics, offers a glimpse into the mysterious and often chaotic quantum realm through his large format "Lightjet" photographic images.

These artistic interpretations, which can be viewed at the M.I.T. Museum's Compton Gallery through May 6, apply data from his theoretic research in quantum and classical mechanics.

Heller will be on hand to answer questions, sign prints, and explain the science behind his images on Saturday, April 28, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Compton Gallery, 77 Massachusetts Ave., in Cambridge. Admission to the gallery is free.

Walk for Hunger sponsorship

For the 11th consecutive year, the Office of Government, Community and Public Affairs will contribute 50 cents for each mile walked and for each hour volunteered by Harvard faculty, staff, retirees, and students in Project Bread's Walk for Hunger. Starting at the Boston Common and encompassing 20 miles, the walk takes place on Sunday, May 6. Walkers may cover as many miles as they wish. To receive sponsorship, call (617) 495-4955.
