Lamont Library deploys wireless Ethernet

With the beginning of Spring term, the Harvard College Library, in collaboration with Harvard Arts and Sciences Computing Services (HASCS), launched wireless Ethernet services in Lamont Library. The introduction of these services at Lamont represents the first deployment that is primarily intended to serve the undergraduate student body.

The technology employed for the new services is the same that has enabled wireless networking at a few other colleges and universities during the past two years. Called the IEEE 802.11b specification, the technology provides managed connectivity at up to 11 megabits per second

In Lamont, wireless networking transceivers, or access points, have been installed in the main reading room and reference area of the main floor. Students are able to make use of the wireless network via laptop computers made available through the Lamont Laptop Loan Program. Students who bring their own laptops to Lamont can also take advantage of the wireless connections. Wireless Ethernet cards can be purchased through Harvard's Technology Product Center and complete instructions on how to configure both Apple Powerbooks and Windows-based laptops are available through HASCS at http://www.fas.harvard.edu/computing/docs/. In addition, help is available on a walk-in basis at Science Center B-3, and via e-mail (help@fas.harvard.edu for students, fascs@fas.harvard.edu for faculty and staff).

An updated list of access points is available at http://www.fas.harvard.edu/network/wireless.
