HARVARD GAZETTE ARCHIVES Kennedy School Student Leaders Push for End of Cuban Embargo
Student leaders at the Kennedy School of Government (KSG) passed a resolution this week calling for the immediate repeal of the U.S. economic embargo of Cuba. The vote capped a contentious debate resonating with historical overtones and occurring at the school named for former President John F. Kennedy, whose administration imposed the embargo on Cuba nearly 40 years ago. It was the first time the Kennedy School Student Government (KSSG) has passed a resolution dealing exclusively with U.S. foreign policy. During the debate, it was resolved that presenting student views to the nation were part of KSSG’s charter, and that the U.S. government should take decisive steps to reconcile its relationship with Cuba. The intended recipients of the resolution include President Clinton, Vice President Gore, and the members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
