Student Effort Adds 1,000 to Voting Rolls

Students at the Institute of Politics (IOP) this term added nearly 1,000 Harvard undergraduates to the rolls of registered voters in a three-month, door-to-door campaign, which ended Dec. 13.

Organizers focused their efforts on freshmen. "Most Harvard first-years have just turned 18, and this is their first opportunity to register," said Marissa Shorenstein ’01, who chaired the voter registration drive along with Erin Ashwell ’02. "We wanted to make it as easy as possible for students to become voters."

IOP students involved in the voter registration drive went the extra step of providing and mailing absentee ballot request forms for those Harvard undergraduates who want to vote in their home districts. "It does people no good just to register, if they don’t actually vote," said Ashwell. "We hope students will make the most of the opportunity they have to make their voices heard."

The Institute will continue its voter registration effort next term and next fall in anticipation of the presidential primaries and the 2000 general election. "Our door is always open for people who want to register," Ashwell added.
