Provost Takes Medical Leave

Provost Harvey V. Fineberg will undergo surgery this week for what appears to be an early-stage cancer of the prostate. The condition was detected by a routine screening test. Doctors say the prognosis for a complete cure is excellent.

Fineberg expects to take up selected tasks in perhaps four weeks and to resume a fuller range of activities over a period of a few months. In his absence, Associate Provost Dennis Thompson will serve as the principal coordinator for the work of the provost's office.

In a letter to his associates, Fineberg said, "I will miss joining many of you in the holiday festivities that mark this time of year. My thoughts and best wishes are with you now, and I look forward to being back with you in the New Year."
