Gates, Appiah Publish; Gates Broadcasts Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience, written by Henry Louis Gates Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities and director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research, and K. Anthony Appiah, professor of Afro-American studies and of philosophy, will be published in early November. Gates' work also was seen on television this week, in the PBS series, Wonders of the African World. The series follows Gates' travels through a dozen African nations as he illuminates the history of that continent. A companion book of the same name also has been published.Zeckhauser Elected to NAS Institute Kennedy School of Government Professor Richard J. Zeckhauser was recently elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Members are selected on the basis of professional achievement and of demonstrated interest, concern, and involvement with problems and critical issues which affect the health of the public. The Institute of Medicine is concerned with the protection and advancement of the health professions and sciences.President of Nigeria is Guest of Emerging Africa Project His Excellency President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria willgive a public address on "Democracy and Development in Africa" at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, in the ARCO Forum of Public Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government. Obasanjo's visit to Harvard is sponsored by the Emerging Africa Project at the Center for International Development. The Emerging Africa Project is a collaboration among Harvard, leading African research institutions, and regional development and financial institutions to address the unique conditions of ecology, geography, investment, and public health that pose deep challenges to sustainable development in Africa.
