October 21, 1999Law School Classroom Dedication To Honor VorenbergFormer Law School Dean James Vorenberg will be honored during an Oct. 22 ceremony dedicating the newly renovated Vorenberg Classroom in Langdell Hall. Ottoman Calligraphy at the Sackler Museum In the Ottoman tradition, calligraphy was always passed from hand to hand, master to apprentice. Before they received permission to create and sign independent work, apprentices following a practice known as taklid, or imitation spent many years copying practice sheets penned by their masters. Men's Tennis Nets ECAC Championship The top-seeded Harvard Men's Tennis Team won its third consecutive ECAC Championship in dramatic fashion over the weekend of Oct. 8-11, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to edge second-seeded Columbia 4-3 in the finals at Princeton's Lenz Tennis Center. After losing eight out of nine of the first sets, the Crimson displayed poise and determination as the entire squad pulled together to stage one of the most exciting comebacks in Harvard tennis history. Freeman Fellows in Social Medicine Named for 1999-00 The Freeman Foundation Chinese and Southeast Asian Fellowship Program, now in its fourth year, seeks to promote cross-cultural exchange and dialogue in the fields of psychiatry and medical anthropology. The three 1999-00 Freeman Foundation Fellows in the Department of Social Medicine at the Medical School come from the Peoples Republic of China. SPH Study: Walking Reduces Diabetes Risk New research from the School of Public Health (SPH) finds that moderate exercise, accumulated throughout the day, can lower risk of Type 2 diabetes by nearly 50 percent. While previous research has indicated that physical activity is associated with reduced risk of diabetes, this is the first study to look closely at types of exercise and how they are accrued in relation to risk reduction. Psychiatrist Clark, Former Medical Faculty Member, Dies John G. Clark, a psychiatrist who studied religious sects and youth cults, died Oct. 7 at a nursing home in Belmont. He had been suffering from a long-term illness, according to his family. He was 73. Aloian Award Winners Selected Seniors Michael P. Abate 00 and Isabel E. Beerman 00 are the 1999 David Aloian Memorial Scholars. They will be honored at the fall dinner of the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) board of directors on Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Charles Hotel. Memorial Service A memorial service will be held for William Alfred, the Abbott Lawrence Lowell Professor of the Humanities Emeritus, on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2 p.m. at Agassiz Theatre, 10 Garden St. Alfred died May 19. Eleven 1999-2000 Administrative Fellows Named Eleven new fellows have been selected for the 1999-00 Administrative Fellowship Program. Of the 11 fellows, 6 are visiting fellows and five are resident fellows. The 1998-99 academic year was another very active and productive period for the UBC. The Committee initiated three major policy recommendations, all of which were subsequently adopted.
