Harvard seniors Ashley Berman and Julia Blain each recorded a goal to propel the Harvard women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Columbia Lions Saturday, Sept. 18, at Ohiri Field. The victory was the 100th Ivy League victory in the history of the Harvard women's soccer program, making the Crimson the first Ancient Eight women's soccer team to reach the century mark in league wins. After a physical but scoreless first half, the two teams came out gunning in the second stanza. A Columbia foul in the box put Berman on the line for a penalty kick in the 50th minute of play; she promptly buried the ball to the right of Columbia goalie Ali Ahearn to give Harvard a lead it would not relinquish. Nearly 10 minutes later, Meredith Stewart took a restart and fired it to freshman Beth Totman, who redirected it to Blain in front of the net for the 2-0 lead. Just 30 seconds later, Columbia's Stephanie Smith took a rebound off a Harvard defer and kicked it past Harvard freshman goalie Cheryl Gunther for the Lions only score of the afternoon. Gunther recorded four saves for the Crimson, while Ahearn had nine for Columbia. Harvard is now 3-1 on the season, and 1-0 in Ivy play. Columbia posts an identical 3-1 overall mark, but begins the Ivy season at 0-1. Columbia has never posted a win over the Crimson, owning an 0-13-1 mark all time. Since Ivy League play began in women's soccer in 1997, Harvard has posted a 100-30-10 mark all time, a .750 winning percentage. Brown is the next closest team to recording 100 victories in League play, as the Bears entered the 1999 season with an overall Ivy mark of 92-36-10. Harvard has won six Ivy crowns, the most recent coming in 1997. The Crimson will continue its Ivy League schedule this Saturday when it travels to Yale for a noon contest.
