Walker Named Administrative Director at Murray Center

Karen Walker has been named the new administrative director of Radcliffe's Henry A. Murray Research Center.

Walker, whose career includes 15 years working in various capacities at Harvard, will be responsible for the Center's financial management, supervising its program development and conferences, and strategic planning for the Center. She will also oversee the Center's Website.

The Murray Center houses the nation's largest social science data archive on human development across the lifespan and conducts relevant research.

Cilio Wins Fellowship in Epilepsy Research

Maria Roberta Cilio, research fellow in neurology, has won the first fellowship awarded by the Lombroso Foundation for Epilepsy Research.

Cilio was chosen on the merits of her proposed project, "Focal cortical epileptogenic dysplasia: pathogenesis and consequences in the developing brain." She will conduct this project at Children's Hospital in collaboration with and with the supervision of Professor of Neurology Emeritus Cesare Lombroso and Professor of Neurology Gregory Holmes.

Students Win Writing Prizes

Baratunde Thurston ’99 has won the 1999 Dana Reed Prize for distinguished writing in the student publications of Harvard College. Thurston received the $500 prize for "The Juggling Game," an essay published in Diversity & Distinction (November 1998).

Honorable Mention went to Joshua Derman ’99 for the poem "Crofters" and to Keith Gessen ’97-98 for the essay "Because I Do Not Hope to Turn"—both from The Harvard Advocate.

This year’s judges were biographer-editor Amanda Vaill, novelist Francisco Goldman, and New Yorker staff writer Malcolm Gladwell.

Independently administered by Harvard graduates, the Prize has been awarded since 1948 in memory of Dana Reed ’43, who edited several undergraduate publications here before he was killed in action during a World War II bombing raid.

Armini Appointed Director of Public Affairs

Michael Armini
, Radcliffe’s senior media relations officer, has been named the director of public affairs for Radcliffe, Interim President Mary Maples Dunn has announced.

For over a year, Armini has been serving in the Radcliffe Office of Communications, publicizing Radcliffe programs, developing communication strategies, and preparing for this spring’s announcement of the Harvard-Radcliffe merger.

In addition to handling his current responsibilities, Armini will play a role in communications efforts as Harvard and Radcliffe leaders finalize the merger agreement and prepare to launch the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study this fall.
