New Manuscript Chief Appointed At Schlesinger; Moseley To Retire

Kathryn Allamong Jacob has been selected as the new manuscripts administrator at Radcliffe College's Schlesinger Library. Jacob, who is currently deputy director of the American Jewish Historical Society in Waltham, was chosen to succeed Eva Steiner Moseley, the outgoing Johanna-Maria Fraenkel Curator of Manuscripts at the Library.

When Moseley retires from her position in June, she will have spent 27 years shaping and developing the Library's manuscript collection, which documents the history of women in America, primarily since the 19th century. Born in Vienna, Moseley emigrated in 1939. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College and, in 1955, received her A.M. degree in Sanskrit and Indian studies from Radcliffe College. She joined the Radcliffe staff as a manuscript processor in the Schlesinger Library in 1971 and was appointed curator a year later. In 1997, she was named the Johanna-Maria Fraenkel Curator of Manuscripts. Moseley was one of the founders of the Harvard/Radcliffe Archives Group and the Academy of Certified Archivists, the founder of the Boston Archivists Group, and a former president of New England Archivists. In 1987, she was elected Fellow of the Society of American Archivists.

Jacob, the new manuscripts administrator at the Schlesinger, holds a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University and a master's degree from Georgetown University, both in American history. Her undergraduate degree is from Goucher College. She has extensive experience as an archivist, serving initially as the archivist for Johns Hopkins and later for the National Archives and Records Administration. She has published widely and is active in professional organizations.

Jacob is the recipient of an Outstanding Performance Award by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the Thomas Jefferson Prize, and the Henry Adams Prize (sponsored by the Society for History in the Federal Government). She has also received a certificate of appreciation for outstanding service by the United States Senate. A resident of Lexington, Mass., Jacob will be joining the Schlesinger Library staff in July.
