Snyder Receives Halecki Prize for Book
Timothy Snyder, postdoctoral fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs,
will be
awarded the Oskar Halecki Polish and East Central European History Award for his book, Nationalism,
Marxism, and Modern Central Europe: A Biography of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz, 1872-1905.
Published in 1997 by the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute (HURI), the book traces the
development and intellectual growth of Kelles-Krauz, who was an important social thinker in the
traditions of Polish socialism, European positivism, and liberal nationalism. The book is available
through Harvard University Press.
The Halecki Prize is administered by the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences of America. This
is the second HURI book to win the prize since its inception four years ago.
Edward O. Wilson Receives Benjamin Franklin Medal
Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor, was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal
of the American Philosophical Society last month in Philadelphia.
The commemorative medal was created by authorization of the United States Congress in 1906 to
mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin. It is the Society's highest award in the
sciences or humanities.
Kelman Receives Austrian Medal of Honor
Herbert C. Kelman, Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics, was awarded "das
Österreichische Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst I. Klasse"
(the Austrian Medal of Honor for Science and Art, First Class). The Medal is the Austrian government's
highest decoration in the field of science.
A native of Vienna, Kelman was presented the Medal by Wolf Frühauf, director general of the
Austrian Ministry of Science and Transport, on behalf of the President of the Republic. The presentation
was made in a special ceremony at the Third Pan-European International Relations Conference, which was
held at the Vienna University of Economics.
