Goodheart Named Secretary to UniversityMarc Goodheart has been named Secretary to the University and Assistant to the President, President Neil L. Rudenstine has announced. In his new role, Goodheart will serve as the chief administrative officer of Harvard's two Governing Boards -- the Corporation and the Board of Overseers -- while continuing as a member of the President's senior staff. "Marc has all the talents and experience to do an absolutely outstanding job as Secretary to the Governing Boards," Rudenstine said. "He knows Harvard, he understands the challenges facing higher education, and he is widely admired and respected throughout the University." "It's been a great privilege and wonderful education to work with President Rudenstine these past few years," Goodheart said. "I'm grateful for this opportunity to join with my new colleagues in Loeb House, and to continue working with my colleagues in Mass Hall, in serving both the President and the Governing Boards as supportively as possible in the time ahead." Goodheart is a magna cum laude graduate of both Harvard College (1981), where he was president of the Harvard Independent, and Harvard Law School (1985), where he was executive editor of the Harvard Law Review. After clerking for Judge Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Court of Appeals, he practiced law in Harvard's Office of the General Counsel and then at the Boston law firm of Hill & Barlow. He returned to Harvard as a University Attorney in December 1991, and since the fall of 1992 has performed a wide range of duties as Assistant to President Rudenstine. Goodheart lives in Brookline with his wife, Lisa, an environmental lawyer, and their 2-year old daughter, Nina.
