AAAS inducts four from University
Provost Harvey V. Fineberg, Chemistry Professor Eric
Jacobsen; research associate in atmospheric chemistry Jennifer A.
Logan; and Biology Professor and director of the Harvard University
Herbaria Michael J. Donoghue have been named Fellows of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
They are among 270 new fellows elevated to this rank for their efforts
toward advancing science or fostering applications that are deemed scientifically
or socially distinguished. They will be presented with an official certificate
and lapel pin at the Fellows forum during the Annual Meeting in February.
Founded in 1848, AAAS represents the world's largest federation of scientists
and has more than 144,000 individual members.
Coates Named Assistant Professor of Law
John C. Coates has been appointed assistant professor of law at
the Law School. Coates, who was a partner at Watchell, Lipton, Rosen &
Katz in New York, is a specialist in corporate and financial law and regulation.
He will teach courses on mergers and acquisitions, corporations, and financial
institutions. He has been an adjunct assistant professor at New York University
School of Law, has lectured at Boston University Law School, and published
a number of articles in trade publications in the corporate, securities,
and banking law areas.
Robert G. Kegan To Receive Honorary Degree
Robert G. Kegan, senior lecturer on education at the Graduate School
of Education and chair of the Learning and Teaching Department, will receive
an honorary degree -- Doctor of Humane Letters -- from SUNY Empire State
College in recognition of his "distinguished contributions to the scholarship
of adult development and learning and to the improvement of educational
programs for adult students."
The degree will be conferred on Kegan in Rochester, N.Y., on Oct. 26.
Panel Discussion to Celebrate Professor Archibald Cox
A panel discussion on "Archibald Cox: The Life and Legend of a Public
Servant" will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, at the Ames
Courtroom, 1515 Massachusetts Ave. The event will mark the publication of
a new biography of Cox, a Law School professor emeritus. The book,
Archibald Cox: Conscience of a Nation, was written by Ken Gormley
'80, a professor at Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh, with
a foreword by Elliot Richardson. The panel will include: Cox; Professor
Philip Heymann, moderator and former Watergate prosecuter under Cox; Derek
Bok, President Emeritus of Harvard; Gormley; Professor James Vorenberg,
former Watergate prosecuter under Cox; and Professor Emeritus
Clark Byse.
