Tragic Death Serves as a Reminder
We are saddened to hear about the death of an M.I.T. student after apparent alcohol poisoning at a fraternity. We wish to express our condolences to the family and to our colleagues at M.I.T. who are helping that exceptional community cope with this tragedy. This incident reminds us that alcohol use has great risks associated with it. At Harvard College, we reiterate our warning about the abuse of alcohol and underage drinking. The College rules are clear on these matters. In particular, we remind the officers of the final clubs that they must obey the law and bring their practices into compliance with College, state, and federal rules, as highlighted in the alchohol and drug statement distributed at registration. At this time, we remind students, friends, roommates, and proctors that there are resources available at University Health Services (UHS). If any student becomes seriously intoxicated and incapacitated by alcohol, or sees someone who is, this must be taken in earnest as a potentially life-threatening condition, and University Health Services should be contacted for advice and appropriate treatment. Medical assistance and counseling is available 24 hours a day at UHS in the Holyoke Center, 495-5711. The University Police are always available to help at 29 Garden St., 495-1212. Archie C. Epps Dean of Students, Harvard College October 1, 1997
