  Mark E. Weinstein, Chief of Surgery at UHS, Dies at 52

Mark E. Weinstein '65, chief of surgery at University Health Services (UHS), died sudddenly of heart disease on July 9 at his home in Dover, Mass. He was 52.

Besides serving as chief of surgery at UHS since 1993, Weinstein was an assistant professor of surgery at the Medical School and served on the staffs of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Weinstein grew up in modest circumstances in Brooklyn, N.Y. After completing high school there in 1961, he entered Harvard College in 1961 at age 16. He went on to New York University School of Medicine, where he earned an M.D. degree in 1969.

Weinstein did his internship and residency at Beth Israel Hospital. An expert in diseases of the breast and the gastrointestinal tract, he held many clinical and administrative posts at Beth Israel, including director of the Respiratory-Surgical Intensive Care Unit. He also taught surgery for almost 20 years at the Medical School and served as medical examiner for the town of Brookline, Mass.

Weinstein is survived by his wife, Nancy (Chase) of Cohasset, Mass., and three children, Sarah, 8, Andrew, 10, and Anne, 23.
