HARVARD GAZETTE ARCHIVES New Members Elected to Board of Overseers The President of the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) has announced the results of the annual election of new members of the Harvard Board of Overseers. The results were released at the annual meeting of the association following the University's 346th Commencement. The five newly elected Overseers, in order of their finish, are: Candidate Number of Votes 1. Mildred S. Dresselhaus 19,916 2. Walter B. Hewlett 17,612 3. Richard H. Jenrette 15,641 4. Thomas S. Williamson Jr. 15,376 5. Nina Marchetti Archabal 15,106 6. Sheila James Kuehl 14,606 Candidate who received the 14,525 seventh highest number of votes The first five candidates were elected to serve for six-year terms; the candidate in sixth place was elected to serve for a two-year term, to fill a vacancy on the Board. In 1997 there were nine candidates, eight nominated by the Harvard Alumni Association and one nominated by certificates from Harvard degree-holders. A total of 33,372 alumni/ae cast ballots in the election for an 17.4 percent rate of participation. The primary function of the Board of Overseers is to encourage the University to maintain the highest attainable standards as a place of learning. Overseers carry out this mission by visiting faculties, departments, and other important programs throughout the University so that they can inform themselves about the quality of teaching, research, and administration and then identify problems and offer advice to faculties and University officials. Elected Directors HAA Elected Directors represent the alumni population on the HAA Board and provide leadership for the HAA and its various committees. The six new HAA Elected Directors, in the order of their finish, are: Susan Graham Harrison '64, Stanford, Calif.; Alphonse Fletcher Jr. '87, New York, N.Y.; Honey Jacobs Skinner '79, Chicago, Ill.; Cora Yamamoto '75, McLean, Va.; Bernard E. Kreger '59, MPH '70, Boston, Mass.; Charles G. Phillips III '70, MBA '72, New York, N.Y.
