  Cox To Receive Law School Award

Professor Emeritus Archibald Cox is the 1997 recipient of the

Harvard Law School Association Award (HLSA).

The HLSA Award, the highest honor given by the Association,

recognizes sustained or extraordinary service to the legal profession and Harvard Law School as well as contributions to the public welfare that exemplify the values of the Law School.

Law School Dean Robert Clark and HLSA President Charles Brock will present the HLSA Award to Cox during noon ceremonies on Wednesday, June 4, at the Law School's Jarvis Field, near Harkness Commons, 14 Everett St., Cambridge.

Cox was appointed Visiting Lecturer at the Law School in 1945, professor in 1946, Royall Professor in 1958, Williston Professor in 1965, Carl M. Loeb University Professor in 1976, and Carl M. Loeb University Professor Emeritus in 1984. He taught courses in torts and in administrative, constitutional, and labor law.

Cox received his A.B. in 1934 in American history from Harvard and his LL.B. in 1937 from the Law School.

Cox served as U.S. Solicitor General from 1961 to 1965. In 1973 he served as the first Watergate Special Prosecutor until he was dismissed by President Nixon.

Previous recipients of the HLSA Award were John Cogan Jr., former managing partner of the Boston law firm of Hale and Dorr; Derek Bok, former Harvard University President and Harvard Law School Dean; Mary Robinson, President of the Republic of Ireland; Roswell Perkins, former American Law Institute President; William Coleman Jr., former U.S. Secretary of Transportation; Harry Blackmun, former U.S. Supreme Court Justice; and Erwin Griswold, former Harvard Law School Dean.
