  CFIA Summer Travel Grant Winners

The Center for International Affairs awarded Summer Travel Grants to eight undergraduates conducting senior thesis research on topics related to international affairs.

Grant winners will travel to a foreign country this summer to conduct senior thesis research. Nicole Barry (social studies), sponsored by the Julian M. Sobin Fund, will use her grant in South Africa to research the development of nongovernmental organizations in Cape Town's education reform in the post-apartheid period. Charles Everett (social studies) will investigate the process of constructing apartheid's "official history" through the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Priti Gor (economics), sponsored by the Harvard International Relations Council, will examine factors influencing a woman's decision to work inside or outside of the home in Puerto Rico. Richard Hughes (government) will travel to England to research the influence of land tenure and agricultural commercialization on agricultural policy in pre-industrial Europe. Anupam Mishra (economics), sponsored by the Julian M. Sobin Fund, will study regional inequality in India while examining the causes of the varying incomes and levels of economic growth in different states and provinces. Karthik Muralidharan (economics), sponsored by the Harvard International Relations Council, will conduct research on the effects of agricultural protection and public investment on agricultural productivity and development in India. Julia Raiskin (anthropology), sponsored by the Julian M. Sobin Fund, will study the transformation of Soviet psychiatry in the post-Soviet transition and the social and cultural impact of the transition in Russia. Ellen Shustorovich (social studies) will research France's role in the formulation of the European Community's Audiovisual Trade Policy.
