Arboretum's educational software wins prize

Rainforest Researchers(TM), a cooperative educational CD-ROM program developed by Tom Snyder Productions (Watertown, Mass.) and Harvard's Arnold Arboretum, has won the Software Publishers Association Excellence in Software Award ("Codie") for Best Curriculum Software for Middle School. The award was presented at a ceremony last month in San Diego, Calif.

The Codie Award annually honors the most innovative and creative software programs produced during the previous year. More than 900 programs in 35 categories were nominated this year.

Designed for grades 5 through 8, Rainforest Researchers engages teams of students in solving scientific problems in the rainforests of Indonesia, where the Arboretum has long conducted botanical research. In the process, students learn about threats to rainforest biodiversity and confront the challenges of preserving the ecosystem.

Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, Rainforest Researchers costs $199.95. The comprehensive kit includes a Macintosh or Windows CD-ROM, an introductory videotape, a teacher's guide with hands-on activities, and 28 "student expert" books.
