Suleiman Named Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France and Professor of Comparative Literature

Susan Rubin Suleiman, professor of Romance and comparative literatures in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, has been named the C. Douglas Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France and professor of comparative literature.

Suleiman has been on the Harvard faculty since 1981 and teaches courses on French literature and civilization and on modern culture. Her books include Risking Who One Is: Encounters with Contemporary Art and Literature (1994) and Subversive Intent: Gender, Politics, and the Avant-Garde (1990).

The FAS established the Dillon Professorship in 1957 with a gift from Clarence Dillon '05 in honor of his son, Clarence Douglas Dillon '31. The chair was previously occupied by Stanley Hoffmann, who has become the Paul and Catherine Buttenwieser University Professor.
