  Office for the Arts Spring '97 Grants Support Students' Creativity

Harvard-Radcliffe students are embarking on a wide array of innovative artistic projects, funded by the Harvard-Radcliffe Office for the Arts and to be presented this spring.

The Harvard Council on the Arts awarded 35 spring '97 grants -- a total of $14,425 -- to support innovative undergraduate arts projects (funding more than 68 percent of all applications received).

Members of the Council at the time of the meeting were: Robert J. Kiely (chair), S. Allen Counter, Thomas Kelly, Arthur L. Loeb, Claire Mallardi, Myra Mayman, Jill McCorkle, Jane P. Nichols, Jeff W. Nichols, and Ivan A. Tcherepnin. The OFA will also offer grants for projects to take place during ARTS FIRST, May 1-4. The deadline for OFA grant applications for projects occuring in fall semester 1997 is Thursday, April 24.

Spring 1997 Grants

DANCE

Crimson Dance Team, Hsin Chau '98, $300 for general production expenses for spring '97 performances, including the play Coriolanus, the Mainly Jazz spring show, and the CityStep Cabaret.

CityStep, Thi Luu '97, $1,000 for the spring CityStep show featuring Harvard-Radcliffe undergraduates and Cambridge Public School children performing original dance pieces.

H-R Dance Company, Miranda Hodgson '97, $500 in honor of Irene Malozomoff Weigel '70 for a spring performance of a student-choreographed and performed work.

Mainly Jazz Dance Company, Alexandra Wilkis '99, $440 for a concert of student-choreographed jazz dance pieces.

LITERARY

The Harvard Tampoon, Elizabeth Schoyer '97, $200 toward the publication of the third edition of this humor magazine incorporating literature, illustrations, and graphics.

Lighthouse Magazine, Dorothy Wang '97, $400 in honor of Andrew Heiskell for the publication of the spring issue of Lighthouse Magazine devoted entirely to showcasing women's art at Harvard and Radcliffe.

MULTI-DISCIPLINARY

ALIENation, Joshua Oppenheimer '97, $700 Timothy S. Mayer '66 Grant for a series of six installations using video, sculpture, and live performance exploring the "alien" as a figure for the radically other against which American identity is forged.

The Cocktail Party, Owen Lefkon '99, $200 Timothy S. Mayer '66 Grant for a multimedia presentation of T.S. Eliot's play.

Audio Mirrors: Echo/Location, EMBRYO, Sasha Constanza Chock '98, $500 for a collaborative installation consisting of seven mirrors manipulated to distort both visual and audio reflection.

The Magic Flute, A Puppet Opera, $300 Timothy S. Mayer '66 Grant for the performance of an abbreviated version of The Magic Flute using live orchestra, singers, and puppets.

MUSIC

Bach Society Orchestra Concert, Helen French '97, $500 in honor of John C. Adams '69 and Deborah L. O'Grady in support of a spring concert featuring the winning entry in the Society's Undergraduate Composition Competition, Haydn's D major Cello Concerto and Vaughan William's Symphony No. 8.

English Recusan Mass Ritual, A Voci Pari, Christopher Thorpe '97, $560 in honor of Peter S. Heller '48, LLB '52, for production of an authentic performance for four voices by William Byrd, interspersed with settings of the propers for an Easter Mass service.

Gospelfest IV, Gospelfest Planning Committee, Rachel Averbuck '97, $500 Kahn Grant for the fourth annual festival in commemoration of World AIDS Day showcasing gospel musicians from the Harvard community as well as nearby universities.

Harvard Independent Music Society, Kyle Lapidus '97, $300 in honor of Alexander A. Bernhard, LLB '64, for the creation of acoustic and electro-acoustic string and wind instruments, construction of oscillators and electronic synthesizers, and an interactive installation.

The Purim Story, Harvard-Radcliffe Hillel, Guy Maytal '97, $200 in honor of Robert L. Birnbaum '65 in support of a performance of George Fredrich Handel's Esther oratorio to coincide with the Jewish holiday of Purim in mid-March.

Toscanini Chamber Orchestra, Albert Kim '99, $300 in honor of Stephen Stamas '53, PhD '57, and Elaine Stamas in support of the orchestra's spring concert.

THEATER

A Night of Ferlinghetti, $500 Timothy S. Mayer '66 Grant to support the production of two plays by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, A Thousand Red Ants and His Head.

Chess, H-R Asian-American Association Players, Michelle Chen '99, $600 Timothy S. Mayer '66 Grant in support of reinterpretation of the musical/rock opera through the lens of the Asian and Asian-American experience.

Adams Chinese Theatre, John Weinstein, Adams House Tutor, $800 Timothy S. Mayer '66 Grant for the staged reading of four newly translated Chinese plays and a full-scale production of a stage adaptation of Pai Hsien-Yung's novel Crystal Boys, both world premiere events.

Greenroom and Accessory, Scott Brown '98, $500 in honor of Victoria G. Traube '68, MAT '70 in support of the production of two original, one-act plays.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, David Bottorff '98, $500 in honor of Jack Lemmon '47 in support of the production of Tom Stoppard's classic play.

The Freshman Musical, Anne Thompson '00, $400 in honor of John Lithgow '67 for the production of the student-created and produced Freshman Musical.

TRADITIONAL

Ghungroo, South Asian Association, Nikhil Chandra '94, $350 to fund production of a multidisciplinary show exposing South Asian Culture to the Harvard community.

Korean Americans for Culture and Community, Eric Cho '98, $300 Kahn Grant in support of a multimedia production, using poongmul, a multi-disciplinary Korean art form.

Borderlands, H-R Asian American Association, Saukok Chu '98, $500 for the production of a multi-disciplinary exhibition of Asian cultural performance.

Kuumba Singers, Jante Santos '99, $300 in support of the Kuumba Singers' annual spring concert featuring traditional African songs, jubilees, spiritual and gospel music.

Caribbean Cultural Explosion, Kevin Johnson '98, $200 in honor of Dorothy E. Weaver '76 in support of an evening showcase of different artforms originating in the Caribbean sponsored by the Caribbean Club, the Haitian Alliance, and Fuerza Unida.

Asian American Dance Troupe, Cecilia Chan '98, $250 for production support for the Asian American Dance Troupe's annual spring performance, featuring two new dances.

Capoeira: Jingando com as Sombras, Harvard Brazilian Organization, Aaron Myers '97, $225 Kahn Grant in support of an original dance performance with innovative staging.

VISUAL

Adamsian Dreamscapes, Adams House Darkroom, Heather Gorman '98, $250 in support of a photographic workshop dealing with the theme of dreams, and an installation exhibit of resulting work.

Fig-Leaf Art-Makers, Liz Alderman '97, $400 in honor of Martin Segal for production expenses related to the creation of a collaborative work of art to commemorate AIDS awareness year-round.

Harvard Photography Journal, Andrew Sachs '97, $500 given by Antonia P. DuBrul in honor of Myra A. Mayman to produce the fall and spring issues of the Harvard Photography Journal.

Human Body Part Casting Project, Fig-Leaf Art-Makers, Jennifer Gootman '98, $100 for the execution of one or more installations exploring the meaning of the human body and how it is viewed.

Adams Art Studio, Heather Gorman '98, $350 supporting the continuation of a weekly life-drawing open studio for all undergraduates.

Yard Play, AgitProp, Ron Roseman '98, $500 given by the Roy A. Hunt Foundation in honor of Myra A. Mayman for a public installation and performance project to take place in Harvard Yard incorporating sculpture, chalk art, a giant puppet show, and the "yard megaphone."
