  Graduate Student Fung Lam Dies

Funeral services are being held in Boston today for Fung Lam, 26, a first-year graduate student in chemistry who died Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital. The cause of death has not been determined. Lam was found unconscious in the laboratory of Elias J. Corey, Sheldon Emery Professor of Organic Chemistry, on Thursday, and he remained on a respirator until his death.

Lam was from Hong Kong and came to Harvard from a Ph.D. program at the University of Southern California. At Harvard, he lived in Perkins Hall, one of four residence halls for students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

To inform friends and colleagues about Lam's death, Harvard held meetings on Tuesday in the Chemistry Department and in Perkins Hall.

"We in the Graduate School are deeply saddened by the untimely death of this promising young scholar," said GSAS Dean Christoph Wolff. "Our condolences go out to his family, and our thoughts include all who are affected by this tragic incident, especially the fellow students."

The funeral is today (Thursday) at the Waterman Funeral Service, 495 Commonwealth Ave., Kenmore Square, Boston. Calling hours are at 10 a.m., and the ceremony is at 1 p.m.
